OAKLAND A driver died Tuesday after veering off a Bay Area freeway and crashing into a pair of trees, the California Highway Patrol said.

Investigators are examining the possibility the man may have had a medical event before the crash, CHP spokesperson Office A.S. Zeid said. The Dodge Ram he drove veered off the road about 8:55 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 580 near the High Street exit and came to a rest on Porter Street.

Authorities identified him Thursday as 56-year-old Henry Oliver Jr., of San Francisco.

An ambulance rushed Oliver Jr. to Highland Hospital following the wreck. Medical personnel pronounced him dead there.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash, Zeid said. The investigation is ongoing.

No other vehicles were involved.
